Serendipiosity, Serendipatiousness

Serendipity.

In the movie, Serendipity, John Cusack (Jonathan) is talking with Kate Beckinsale (Sara) in a quaint, famous, frozen hot chocolate shop in New York City called Serendipity. They begin to discuss the word "serendipity," and both its relation and disconnect with the word "fate." Jonathan is not comfortable nor familiar with the concept of serendipitous happenstances. She is playing slightly hard to get, and he is trying to see her just one more time. She states that fate will play its cards and deal, while Jonathan is gauging the concept and exclaims (in third person storytelling with self proclaimed protagonist qualities) that through an act of serendipiosity or serendipatiousness he met Sara in busy New York and ensues that they should take advantage of it. Previously, she told him that her favorite word was 'serendipity.' Serendipity is a "fortunate happenstance" or a "pleasant surprise," or as the movie calls it, "a fortunate accident." Sara doesn't believe in accidents, only fate, though she loves the sound of the word; this right here is the conflict. She laughs at his explanation of their meeting, but she still refuses to intentionally see him again and believes fate will take its course.

Needless to say, I recommend this movie, and am a sucker for such a plot. Regardless, this scene in particular settled with me. For understood reasons, I love this word, too. The humor of it all is proven through Jonathan's character who knowingly (or unknowingly) uses the terms "serendipiosity" or "serendipatiousness," which in fact are not real forms of the word. His point was presented and taken gladly by the laughter she responded with, but I realized by his harmless, humorous, maybe even insignificant and scripted remark, that life is not about the technicalities. As long as life is lived and shared, whether through serendipitous moments or fate resulted happenings, that is all that truly matters. He jokingly used nonexistent words to regard the exact same point and deliver it in such a way that led to something greater. Jonathan's simple remark in the movie can be stretched in such a way to correlate with life and the uselessness in caring for all of its intricacies. A life should be lived with an appreciation for serendipitous moments, that do not always need to be understood.
